Open all year
The warmer months are by the far the most popular time to visit Kangaroo Island. From mid-December to end of February it is extremely busy on the Island.
Spending time on, in or near the water is a huge attraction to the island - Kangaroo Island is ideal for fishing, snorkelling, swimming with dolphins, walking on the beach to observe sea lions, or going on boating tours. However, if the main reason you wish to visit the island is to observe the wildlife and the spectacular scenery, it is possible to visit the island at any time of the year.
During winter, the main thing to be aware of is that access to the island can be a challenge if it is extremely windy, as the ferry is cancelled if it is considered unsafe to sail. It is also difficult to go sightseeing or bushwalking if it is pouring with rain. Some attractions, such as Admirals Arch and Flinders Chase will close on windy days (they will also close on extremely hot days too).
BUT, winter is a really beautiful time to visit Kangaroo Island - the grass is green, more of the animals are out and about (they do not enjoy the extreme heat in summer any more than we do) and there are fewer people.
Whether you visit in Summer, Winter, Spring or Autumn - make sure you give yourself plenty of time to explore this incredibly beautiful island. Avoid the disappointment of a cancelled ferry or attraction closure by having a spare day or two up your sleeve.
